The Art of Sand Casting - Corvo Jewelry By Lily Raven
Jewelry has always been a product of the fusion of craftsmanship and individuality. Each maker brings their own techniques and style into the process and the finished piece is a triumph of their persistent vision. But where does the process start?
Sand casting is a traditional method that involves creating a mold from sand, which is then filled with molten metal to create intricate jewelry designs. This technique has been used for centuries with origins tracing back to ancient civilizations. The earliest evidence of sand casting can be found in ancient Egypt and China, where artisans used sand molds to create tools, weapons, and decorative items, including jewelry. During the medieval period, sand casting continued to be utilized in Europe for creating intricate religious artifacts, coins, and jewelry.

Sand casting jewelry has a rich history that spans thousands of years, evolving from ancient practices to modern artistry. Its enduring appeal lies in its ability to blend tradition with innovation, making it a cherished technique among jewelers today.

1. Designing the Model
The first step in the sand casting process is designing the model of the jewelry piece. Jewelers often create a prototype using wax, clay, or 3D printing technology, ensuring that the design meets their artistic vision. Corvo is proud to have all of our pieces hand-carved in wax by our designer, Lily Raven.
2. Creating the Sand Mold
Once the model is ready, a mold is created using a mixture of sand and a binding agent. The model is pressed into the sand to create a cavity that captures every detail. Afterward, the mold is carefully removed, leaving a perfect impression of the design.
3. Pouring the Molten Metal
The chosen metal (such as gold, silver, or bronze) is heated until it melts and reaches a liquid state. The molten metal is then poured into the sand mold, filling the cavity and taking on the shape of the jewelry design.
4. Finishing
After the metal has cooled, the sand mold is broken away to reveal the cast piece. The jewelry is then cleaned, polished, and finished to achieve the desired look and quality.

Sand casting is relatively eco-friendly, as it utilizes natural materials and generates minimal waste. We're proud to be focusing on sustainable practices, combining age-old craftsmanship with modern creativity.
