Squaring the circle was a problem proposed by ancient geometers. It dealt with constructing a square equal in area to a given circle - a problem incapable of a purely geometric solution. The meaning of the phrase is to do something that is considered to be impossible.

These mines were so hidden, it took the Spanish conquistadors nearly twenty years to find them.
